Every column of the April 19, 1865 issue of the New York Herald has black mourning rules for the death of President Abraham Lincoln. This issue was printed on Wednesday and key articles include an update on the condition of Secretary Seward and his son Frederick; the arrest of Mary Surratt and Lewis Paine (or Payne) — born Lewis Thornton Powell; and the train schedule for the transportation of President Lincoln’s body from Washington to Springfield. All images are © Ben Edwards.
